I’ve been playing for 52 years, mostly self taught until I started watching online videos this past year. I’ve learned a lot and easier ways to play the fretboard. I watch a lot of beginner videos and see things I’ve missed over the years. Thank you!

I've been playing acoustic for 40 years and I have always stayed away from soloing up the neck because I thought I would never understand it. I made it a goal this year to open up my mind and see If I can learn it. This video has kicked a door open that is long overdue. I have 4 original albums worth of cowboy chord songs and I'm finally excited again about playing guitar. I have always loved Clapton's melodic soloing and I think I'm gonna make a run at it. I could hear my solos in my head but really never learned how to navigate it. Thanks Dude. Keep up the good work.

I am not a beginner at the guitar, but I always try watch beginning guitars videos by musicians that I respect, to see if there is something I may have missed, or another way of looking at a subject that I am familiar with. Thanks for the lesson.

Thank you. That is a breakthrough perspective on using pentatonics across the chords in a key.

Damn it, Sean! I've been putting these pieces together for the past six or seven years of my life. Knowing the theory, but fleshing out how to best express these ideas to people. You always seem to beat me to the punch at just the right time, and I love you for it brother.

I’ve felt the same way you do about pentatonics. Very practical application for playing the changes! Thank you!

Dang SEAN! This TOTALLY blew up my brain too! Yeah, it must just be something about how some of our minds conceptualize shapes in the fretboard.
I’ve had the minor pentatonic under my belt for a long time, but had been thinking of it mainly in the scope of soloing. It was never really “connected” into my chord or rhythm work. Simply by re-framing the shape of it - POW! It slips right into rhythm/strumming/chord playing and becomes a completely fluid extension that is now always right there and available.

It’s AMAZING the way there can occasionally be major changes in how we see something we’ve already been looking at for ages.
I’m shaking my head at MYSELF for not seeing this one before.
But hey… better late than never, right?!
100 extra thanks for this one!
The first 100 were for the introduction to that lovely new Gretsch you got and demoed just recently.

You had me until the 9 minute mark. Then, my head exploded. Valuable lesson. Your enthusiasm, as always, is infectious. Please consider playing your initial examples slowly, so I don’t have rewind ten times. Thanks!

Great lesson, Sean. The eye-opening part (something I did not think too much about until you started talking about tying pentatonic scales and chords in a key) is that the following two statements are true: "If a note in a major scale is a root of a minor chord, than the scale fully contains its minor pentatonic scale: and "if a note in a major scale is a root of a major chord, than the scale fully contains its major pentatonic scale". This, to some degree, is an observation about the structure of major scales, but also a safe haven in a pinch - ANY key that contains an Am chord, e.g., contains its minor pentatonic, so what you did in the lesson is applicable to the other two scales A is in in "minor" position. From a music theory POV, perhaps a trivial observation, but when one is playing and wants to switch between chords and some single-note stuff in a pinch - a much easier thing to remember. (also gives you a chance to extend this lesson into a new introduction of modes - heh - by discussing how, when moving past the chord's major/minor pentatonic scale inside a major scale, you get your six main modes)

Im on month 4 of learning and this lesson is going right over my head 😭, but my brain is eager to learn more.!!!! I can't wait to be able to understand and play along through and through. Thanks for sharing.

YouTube says I've watched this before but I don't recall having my life changed so drastically, I would have remembered. This is blowing my mind. So much for "never lost." (salty)
