The RAF Tornado GR4 is a low-level supersonic strike aircraft with a variable-sweep wing enabling it to perform at both high and low speeds.

The Tornado GR4 is also a world leader in the specialised field of all-weather, day and night tactical reconnaissance. It carries state-of-the-art ASRAAM short range air-to-air missiles for self-protection along with chaff and flares and a 27mm Mauser cannon capable of firing 1700 rounds per minute.

In the offensive role, the Tornado GR4 is equipped with the Storm Shadow missile which allows it to undertake precision strikes at night or in poor weather with a greatly increased stand-off range from the target area. It is also compatible with two variants of the Brimstone missile, which provides the Tornado with an effective anti-armour capability coupled with enhanced stand-off range. Since 1990, the Tornado GR4 has successfully deployed in operational theatres in Iraq, Kosovo, Afghanistan and, most recently, Libya, participating in Operation Ellamy in support of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1970.

The Tornado GR4 performing its role demo at Fairford serves with the operational conversion unit and is based at RAF Lossiemouth, in Scotland.
