How do you use a bicycle repair work stand? A good rule of thumb is to always clamp by the seatpost with the drivetrain facing out. DO NOT clamp the frame! 🙏

Been clamping carbon TTs at the COG point for 18 years. I've never crushed one. There's no need to have the clamp more than finger squeeze tight. If I need a lot of torque (remove cassette lock nut or bottom bracket, or pedals), i put the bike back on the floor.

For those saying brakes are accessible in 3. Note this is a two bike stand. If there is a bike on the other side you get a handlebar to the back, head or kidney. Even with no bike the post that holds the stand head is in the way. 2 and 3 work depending on the task at hand.

Clamping top tubes is easier because you can tighten it after hanging “on” one part of the clamp. However, top tube isn’t the strongest part in carbon frame, and you can actually clamp-crack it. Carbon seatpost is much stronger than TT, designed to withstand your weight and road shock. If you don’t believe me, try riding on top tubes.

Nobody's gonna come to my house if I do it the "wrong" way.

So what is the difference between the last two?

My bike is steel with shit paint so I can hang it however I want. Sometimes I use the spokes.

There is nothing wrong with hanging it on top tube on carbon frame, as long as it's not in the middle of it, and you not overtighten it like crazy.

There's nothing wrong with using the top tube as long as it's not tight. With the shape of today's carbon seat posts you can do just as much damage. Used the top tube for 20 years and no issues !!

Example 2 is wrong because the drive train is facing away from the mechanic.

Oh okay I was clamping at the spoke of my tire, glad you cleared that up for me. 🤷‍♂️

Type 1 works fine, as long as it is not too tight and you don't apply weigt on the wheels side. Type 2 and 3 are better because is cheaper a carbon seat post than a frame (in case you screw it up with the weight and strenght applied). I would use type 2 if I'm working on the barakes and type 3 if I'm working with transmission

Don’t know if this also applies to Aluminum bikes, but, for Carbon bikes you also do the seat post facing that direction because doing it from the frame can cause damage.

Some people think carbon is so easy to break but it isn't. It's not a plastic, especially when you have high quality frame.

Difference between two and three is straight plumb versus a bit of angle?

It is the best practice to clamp the post because if the jaws damage anything, the post is replaceable at lower cost than a frame.

I'm not hanging my emtb from the dropper post, so you hook it up however you want.

Does hanging my enduro from my dropper post eventually loosen thing up in my dropper that shouldn’t be loosened?

Every way is good. I do not see nothing wrong.
