My dad hung a tire in out back yard. I spent hours hitting that thing each week. He told me thats what Mickey Mantle use to do to train. (Cant confirm that as being true lol) but it sounded cool at the time. I really think it help strengthen your core swing muscles

Hit tires and semi flat basketballs is still part of batting training is very common in the caribbean islands. Remember playing carrusso with is broom stick pieces we will cut them about 2" long and trying to hit with another broom stick. Helps for accuracy and keep eyes on the ball for contact when playing regular baseball.

Is it smart to do this with an exercise ball?

They failed to tell people that the ball should not be fully pumped. It should be a little flat to make it harder to go through.

When I was in 5th grade a kid hit a basketball with a bat and the bat bounced back so hard off the ball that it recoiled into his head. Totally smashed his eyebrow up good. Don't really think this is a good drill

Carlos Pena should have focused more on contact. He ranks #40 all time in strikeouts and retired with a career .232 batting average.
