How to Play Pedal Tones on Guitar

A pedal point (also known as a pedal tone or just a pedal) in music is a sustained or repeated note that is sounded against chord progressions and melodies. See either one of my books Fretboard Theory Volume 2 or Guitar Theory For Dummies for more details.

I think what you are teaching is called "common tone". A pedal tone is usually a sustained lower bass note, then you'd play chords or melodies over the sustained note to create different "color" or tension. But correct me if I'm wrong.

Hey Desi, I noticed that is a 1, 5, 6, 4 progression. Do pedal tones work on other progressions as well? Say 1, 4, 5 or any other progression we can come up with as long as we use the tonic and the fifth?

Great stuff Desi. These are the chords from ´With or Without You´ by U2....is the Edge playing pedal tones on the main riff ? Not the infinite guitar part that backtracks the whole song..
