Reviving my hydrangeas 💙

A florist once told me to boil water in a jug or saucepan and hold approximately 4cm (2 inches) of the stems of roses in water which is at a rolling boil for approximately 10 - 15 seconds. I tried it and my roses looked fabulous for more than a week - even roses that had already started to wilt. It was many years ago and now I do it every time. If my memory is correct her explanation was something about the rose’s reaction to being cut - it somehow self-blocks the stem at the point of the cut to prevent the loss of sap, which in turn prevents it from sucking up water. The boiling water reverses that action and allows the rose to drink the cold water which you put the roses in, after you’ve dipped them in boiling water. Hold the blooms away from the steam and the heat of the boiling water. Watching the roses revive is like watching the hydrangeas in this video - but the video is significantly sped up.
