The Reverse Citric Acid Cycle

The reverse citric acid cycle is like a backward version of a more well-known process in our cells that helps generate energy. Normally, the citric acid cycle (also known as the Krebs cycle) takes in products from our food and, step by step, breaks them down to produce energy. In contrast, the reverse citric acid cycle does the opposite: it builds up rather than breaks down. It takes simpler molecules and combines them to form more complex chemicals. This process is especially interesting to scientists because it could represent one of the ways early life on Earth started to build the building blocks necessary for cells. This reverse cycle might have helped set the stage for life as we know it by creating important molecules from basic components available on early Earth.
