In Germany the kids are going to school by themselves at a very young age (starting with 6 years). So as an adult you have to be a role model for not crossing the street when it’s red. If you show them that there is no problem with crossing on red light it will be dangerous for the kids on the way to school because no adult is taking care of them. So this is the main reason for that.

If you go to a restaurant in Germany (no fast food), then it's an event. You stay there for at least 1.5 hours, sometimes 3 hours. You enjoy your meal, no one is in a hurry, no one will drive you off the table even if you linger for 4 hours. Food is (relatively) cheap in Germany, cheaper than in Great Britain or France and definitely cheaper than in the US. In addition, waiter is a real job in Germany, even without tips, waiters can live on their fixed salary. A German restaurant operator has higher costs than an American restaurant operator, if only in terms of personnel costs.
If drinks like water cost nothing or if you could constantly refill without paying, the restaurant operators would go bankrupt.
However, being a waiter is not the highest paying job, so a tip of 5% is appropriate and if the service is really good you can tip 10% or more.

Trader Joe's is actually Aldi Nord (north) from Germany but got a more "American name" to be more appealing to the North American market.

Just don't bag your items at the cashier. Just put them back into your shopping cart and bag them later. Saves a lot of stress ;)

you pay for water and drinks because european restaurants make most of their money by selling the drinks

The one with the bathroom is very true, but we have loads of restaurants where you can just go in and ask nicely if you could use the toilet. They usually say yes.

7:00 Usually every gas station in Germany will allow you to use their restroom, just ask for the key (smaller ones especially) it is free more often than not - all the truckers do that all the time.
Most supermarkets have public restrooms too, mostly for free; another possibility is a pub, restaurant or hotel....

"Water should be free"... but did you know that Coca Cola pumps out German groundwater for 0.00016 euros per liter and sells it us bottled for almost one euro ? 😂😜

Why would someone give you free water in a restaurant...?
Water is the most controlled food in Germany and compliance with the legal requirements does not come for "free".
In addition, restaurants are "sponsored" by regional/international beverage manufacturers, for example breweries or companies like Coka Cola....! that's why waiters in Germany have a much better income than your waiters in the US. Also, you are not thrown out of the restaurant after half an hour to steal the money from the pocket of the next customer with excessive prices for bad The longer you stay in the restaurant in Germany (and order drinks), the shop earns more money, the food only forms the basis that you don't get drunk after the 2 glasses of beer and forget to pay

In Germany it‘s common to have contracts with Beverage distributors. They finance parts of the restaurants and the calculation makes food less expensive. So it‘s not the problem to ask for tap water, but it‘s not very fair because the restaurant needs to sell drinks.

The trick with bagging your groceries is to put on the heavy things first on the band. so theyll land first in the bags with the light stuff on top.

11:56 as long as there are no children around ... you are giving a bad example otherwise....that's why we don't do it; when there is no kid around I don't care whether you jaywalk or not.

#FreeTapWater The restaurants in Germany (or Europe) are in competition with each others. They have to calculate their prices. If they give out free tap water instead of selling mineral water, the prices for the food will have to rise. It's as simple as that.

She noticed many people in the University of Cologne with button down shirts? Alot must have changed in the few years since I was there xD . In general, we made the jokes about the Düsseldorf-students for comming in fancy while in Cologne, it was much more casual (and I was in law, which in generally is, after economic studies, the most conservative guys with good dressing in it).

Edit: Also, with the library. My guess would be that it was due to covid restrictions and thus, limited workspace. I know the bib can be full, but the times I went there (law had their own main bib, so wasn't that often in the main bib), there was never any crazy fights over seats. You might have to search for a while, but you would eventually find a work space. That said, if you have not much room to study at home, the bibs are a good place to do so, so when, due to covid, there is limited space, I imagine that the tension becomes quite high.

As a German I’ve never heard anyone refer to the library as "the bib" and I’ve never seen people run into one like that

8:30 yeah you overpay on the water, sure. But many restaurants dont make a lot on food. They make a small profit usre. But the main income is from drinks. And there is like no need for tipping. Give one € and you are fine. Not like in the us where you pay 10-20%. its just a different culture. Getting nothing to drink in a restaurant is like not tipping in the US. Okay but rude

Please dont order tapwater/ Leitungswasser in a restaurant. If you dont like bubbles in the water order "silent" water/ stilles Wasser.
