Sempervivum tectorum (Hens & Chicks), is an evergreen mat forming succulent native to Europe. It is called by many names, but commonly known as mother & chickens or hens & chicks. The original plant is called the hen, grows and produces tiny rosettes called chicks. Eventually forming a tightly pack mound. In an ideal condition, one rosette can grow up to 6 to 8 inches. Although this is grown in a sunny location; it is protected from afternoon sun and enjoys medium watering. That means, letting the soil dry up, between watering. This area was planted with a dozen chicks only a year ago.

It can be eaten. You can snack on the leaves. Just wash them well before you consume. And of course, make sure that they are naturally grown. Sempervivum tectorum has many health benefits, from helping with ear aches to cleaning up skin rashes and it has even helped some people boost their immune system.
