Welcome to The Mental Breakdown Morning Show! Each weekday morning, we will to help get your day off to a great start. Welcome to The Mental Breakdown and Psychreg Podcast! Today, Dr. Berney and Dr. Marshall begin a weeklong series on defense mechanisms. Originally described by Sigmund Freud, defense mechanisms are strategies we use - consciously or unconsciously - to protect ourselves from challenging and potentially traumatizing experiences. Throughout this week, we will discuss five major defense mechanisms, including:

Denial - the refusal to accept reality or facts.

Projection - the misattribution of an undesirable feeling onto another person.

Sublimation - the channeling of unacceptable feelings into more acceptable ones.

Intellectualization - the overemphasis on thinking when confronted with unacceptable feelings.

Rationalization - putting something into a different light or offering a different explanation.

We hope that you will join us each morning so that we can help you make your day the best it can be! See you tomorrow.

Thank you so much for these videos. I have a test coming up, and you have really helped me understand these defence mechanisms clearly. Listening to your examples and definitions has helped me 100 times more than just reading it from my textbook! so thank you both for the clear explanations! :)

Emotions are an integral part of our metaphysical reality. To say that emotions are illogical or even anti-logical when talking about a metaphysical issue is like saying that gravity is illogical when discussing physics.

It's unhealthy when ur doing it to alter ur intent.... It's healthy when ur doing it to explain ur true intent

Эмоции являются неотъемлемой частью нашей метафизической реальности. Сказать, что эмоции нелогичны или даже антилогичны, когда речь идет о метафизической проблеме — это все равно, что сказать, что гравитация нелогична, когда речь идет о физике

Bit confused over how this is different from 'Intellectualisation' (yes I've watched your video on it). Do you have a nutshell way of distinguishing the two or are they the same phenomenon just under different names?

Rationalization can also be used to lightly coerce you into doing something you really don't want to do.

Example: the boss says, hey you are nominated to do a light-hearted bio of yourself on youtube, but if you're not comfortable doing this, that's okay.

When you respond, thanks, but I prefer not to, the boss then says, aww, ok (can you hear the disappointment?), but people really like these videos. It helps them get to know you better. If you change your mind, let me know.

The boss is pushing the reason he asked in the first place. Rationalization can be part of any sales job. People often don't take your "no" seriously, even though you are an adult and know your own mind. Your "no thanks" in this case, may make the boss feel defensive about the videos. They may already know on some level that the bio videos are an intrusion and downright dumb for some people. You may also feel defensive for saying "no" and offer your own rationalization.

it strikes me that these defense mechanisms can also find a correct explanation. I don't quite like the ease with saying you are just justifying it. If the defence mechanism produces a changei n behaviour then surely it is in some sense addressing the problem.

This makes me sort of suspicious of "defense mechanism" rather than way of addressing the problem.

A moral justification - which is perhapswhat rationalization is meaningful. It justifies you behviour to other, it helps you decide if something is moral or not. It may not prevent action that you want to acheiive.
