The problem with AA

If it works for you awesome

"Alcoholics Anonymous' Big Book touts about a 50% success rate, stating that another 25% remain sober after some relapses."

50/50 at best... Again, if its working for you by all means keep at it

There are countless millions that the rhetoric and fear based approach simply does not work for

AA should not have a monopoly on how this issue is addressed

If you believe you are powerless, you are...

If you believe you are powerful, you are...

“Alcohol is not a disease, politics and common social cues are.”

I agree that some people get sober … and that’s it!!

They stop using alcohol or substances but don’t go out and make a success of their life.

Their primary goal was to remain sober.

As an alcoholic myself I can’t understand this.

They remain depressed etc as they always did, just without alcohol.

With nothing else going on besides sobriety, it keeps them needing many meetings to stabilise.

The fellowship is what kept me sober with AA. But my career and the life I created outside of my recovery is also so important now that I’d be crazy to ruin it with a relapse!

Im so happy to hear this message. I went to AA for over 6 months because I thought thats what you had to do. Everyday. Hated it. Was during covid so was on zoom. The meeting was led by some fucking guy, with no wife, no kids, in his shitty appartment. And would talk like he is king shit because he has 10 years. And tell you the gifts will come. well if those are the gifts I dont want any part in it. Was not motivating at all.

Of course the people who are going to many meetings are at a weak point. Thats what the meetings are there to fix.

Its hard to even clearly express my feelings on this topic. Dr Ingrid Mathieu does a good job and speaks of spiritual bypassing. That is a major issue for me in the fellowship. I mean if it helps others than great but is it being done correctly? Also a high percentage of mental health issues being untreated. I am not much for reliving my drunk past constantly in a meeting either ; i am about staying in the moment. As humans we feel we have to do something to feel better. Just stopping may be enough. I also feel getting MH help is pertinent.

In the Big Book it clearly states that the Drinking is a Solution to Our Problem. "Alcohol is but a symtom to a deeper problem that effects the body, mind and spirit". 60 to 80% of Alcoholics have Co-Morbid Mental Issues. When the Drinking stops the Mental Health Problems still remain and cause life difficulties. All issues with Mental Health need to be addressed for True Recovery to happen. Not just AUD, Alcohol Use Disorder but the underlying co-morbid disorders that preceeded Alcoholism.
