It's not just the notes. It's the voicing of the chords and the tone that he gets with his hands on the piano. He can give you a score of what he just played and you would not sound like that.

And the voicing is so so vital to this sound. Having weak voice leadings can ruin either progression. I don't use plagal nearly as often as I should. Thanks for the inspiration Adam, you're a treasure!

Fifths feel like a nostalgic groove, more casual. Fourths feel very formal.

I to III7 to VI- will always be my personal favorite of all harmonic movements. It makes me feel alive in every positive and negative way I can think of. So basically I feel like this sound is heaven. Far away and unknown, somehow even feared... but still the very terminal peace. No wonder, that it sounds churchy. 🎶
