In this video, I do an unboxing of the Normcore WDT tool. We talk about what WDT even is, and do several trials with a Delonghi Dedica espresso machine: pulling a shot without WDT, making an espresso with WDT via the Normcore tool, and finally, trying one with WDT and a paper filter on the bottom.

Hi Tom! I would strongly suggest to stop using the "twisty tamp" and instead tamp normally. Based on my experience, I tend to get channels in the puck when doing this and instead I tamp normally without any twist or polish at the end. You can try it yourself and feel the difference.
The WDT works really great, I've made mine with a 3D printer and got the model from kim's thingiverse. I'm not getting channels that often as before, and the distribution of the coffee grounds looks better.

Thanks for the video, this is going to help a lot of people when they start this wonderful journey into espresso making!

I have this WDT tool. Right in your own video, there was channeling with and without the tool - i.e. it made no difference. In fact, I'm seeing Reddit posts that suggest the needle type WDTs tend to cause MORE channeling! Some are moving to the palm type distributor/tampers and one outfit sells them for quite a high price - $200 - $300 EACH. That's a very high cost for a device to distribute coffee grounds in a portafilter.

Another great video 👏👏
Does the paper make any difference with pressure like puck screen?
Also is there reason you don’t use puck screen anymore?

Tom whats your thoughts i have avoided using a wdt as of yet as theres so many options different price points. Current setup is a Breville bambino basic and Baratza Encore ESP.. i do use puck paper in sandwich bottom and top.. I shake my grounds before adding it to the portafilter.. like you i upgraded to the express/pro portafilter and an IMS basket.

Hi Tom and thx for the video. We'd love to see how to dial in an expresso with a Breville Cafe Roma.
