Have you ever heard the saying, "When the stars align, magic happens"? In this case, it's not magic, but something far more powerful—divine intervention. The Magi, or wise men, were learned scholars from the East who followed a celestial sign—a star—that announced the birth of the Jewish Messiah, Jesus. Known for their understanding of the stars, they were part of an ancient priesthood mentioned by the historian Herodotus. Their journey to Bethlehem fulfilled prophecies and demonstrated the power of seeking the divine, as they recognized Jesus as a king and brought gifts of gold and frankincense.

Who were the Magi?

The Magi are the wise men in the Nativity Story found in Matthew chapter 2, at the birth of Jesus. They’re described as men from the east who are searching for the Jewish Messiah, the King of the Jews.

The word "Magi" is where we get the word for magician or magic. This is because these were men who seemed to understand the seasons and the times. They would look to the stars. They were a priesthood class that goes back hundreds of years, even before the birth of Jesus.

The ancient Greek historian Herodotus wrote about them and talked about their knowledge of celestial events. Well, these men saw a star appear in the sky and recognized it as a herald that a Jewish Messiah or Jewish king was being born.

So, they set out for Jerusalem. This was an important moment because the Magi showing up at the birth of Jesus does a number of things. First, it shows that the prophecies about Jesus were being fulfilled. We can see in Isaiah chapter 60 that people were coming to Jesus, bringing gold and frankincense.

They didn't arrive at the birth of Jesus but approximately 2 years afterwards. This is why Herod when he realized the magi had cut and run to avoid him murdered all the baby boys two years and under to be on the safe side but by the time he ordered it Joseph, Mary and Jesus were on their way or in Egypt until zHerods death. The gifts provided funds for the family to live on during that time.

So you’re telling me that these men who attended the birth of Jesus were a part of a group that existed even before the birth of Jesus? Fascinating!

I learnt that the word "Magistrate" comes from Magi.

Also i just check and found that there is no connection between the word "Magi" and magic.

Scripture says where they come from exact locations bearing gifts. Sheba and Seba, Tarshish and Islands will bring gifts. He receives gold from Shiba. See Psalms 72 : 10 - 15. This is the correct answer. Jesus answers scriptural questions with Scripture. Learn whole chapters, then you know what answers people should be giving to specific Scripture questions that Scripture answered.
