CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Major Konig (Ed Harris) searches for rival sniper Zaitsev (Jude Law) in a Russian train yard.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
A turning point in 20th century war history is the focus of this fact-based account of the 1942-1943 battle of Stalingrad, in which the Germans were finally defeated by Russian influence -- one of the bloodiest battles in World War II history. The film stars Jude Law as Vassili, a marksman from the Urals who is transported to Stalingrad in 1942, and a master German sniper, Major Koenig (Ed Harris). Koenig, an expert German sniper, is determined to eliminate his formidable opponent by any means necessary; meanwhile, Vassili has joined forces with Danilov (Joseph Fiennes), a young Russian political adversary, who is impressed by Vassili's skills and raises his profile in the Soviet Union. Both Vassili and Danilov become involved with Tanya (Rachel Weisz), whose Jewish parents have been captured by the Germans and have forced her to take up with the men on a sniper expedition. Koenig and Vassili begin to develop traps for each other, until fate inevitably must bring the two sharpshooters together. This large-scale production, financed mostly by Teuton companies, also features Bob Hoskins as Nikita Krushchev and Ron Perlman as an aging Russian sniper.

What an amazing wordless performance by Ed Harris. Without any dialogue, he still manages to convey such powerful emotion as you see him come to terms with his end.

As many others have said, he took his hat off as a sign of respect and to accept defeat by the better sniper.
He realized he had just lost the game

This was the best scene in the movie. Ed Harris flawlessly captured every emotion of this scene. His portrayal of Major Koenig was the best thing about this movie.

At the end when the character Ed Harris plays goes to take off his cap. I got two meanings from that;
1. He took his cap off as a sign of good sportsmanship and to acknowledge the other guys victory.
2.He took his cap off to say "well I'm fucked, you may as well get a clean shot and hit the bulls eye".

Love this scene. Ed Harris realises he's dead and calmy takes off his hat and gives one final look

I like how, despite being mortal enemies locked in a duel, this is the first time either soldier gets a good look at his opponent. Vasily can see Koenig's face through his scope clearly, and Koenig, taking off his cap, turns to look at Vasily so he can finally see the face of the man who's about to kill him.

Ed Harris is soooo badass that he didn’t actually die in this scene and is still alive today!

There was a "sniper duel" in Stalingrad. The real Vassily Zaitsev himself has said so several times, including in his memoirs, Notes Of A Sniper.
However, the "duel" lasted about 3 days, not several months. Furthermore, the name of the German sniper is not known, Zaitsev himself referes to the German sniper as "My Opponent".

Is it me or does Ed Harris look a lot like Field Marshal Rommel? Compare the two side by side and tell me what you think.

Was anyone else rooting for Ed Harris ?

Ed Harris is such a great under utilized actor.

Movie comes back full circle as Vasily actually hits his 'wolf' this time around, and in the eye no less. Grandpa would've been proud. Vasily is an allstar 🌟

Russian did him a favor by killing him.

Being a prisoner, especially a german sniper, he might have not lived long anyway.

Respect to Konig. Knows he's lost, excepts it and even stares death in the face with no fear. True warrior!
