Great advice. Like many newbies, I panicked on my first Sprint Triathlon. I knew I was supposed to start slow but I still ran anyway. There is something about putting people behind a line and hearing "go", we cannot help it but race! Lost my breath and could not catch it until I finished the swim leg. It was miserable, adding breaststroke and backstrokes was the only way to cope with it and finish. My 2nd race, Olympic distance, I followed most the advice from this video, and finished it with a smile. I would say the keys for me were 1) to forget it was a race for the first 100m, 2) to get into a nice slow sustainable pace with proper breathing and freestyle stroke, 3) to get a proper wetsuit with some buoyancy, and most importantly 4) to only focus on my technique.

Great advice. I’ve lived the same scars of open water swimming when I first started this sport.

One question I do have is how do you get in your five minute warm-up during an Iron Man event? They are so congested. There are so many participants and I haven’t been able to find a spot or time to do that. I see the pros warming up and I’m very jealous.

If you have a tempo trainer (like a swim metronome), you can do a stroke rate ramp test where you swim a set of 50s at different rates and write down how hard it feels at each rate. At some rate, it will feel significantly harder/less comfortable than the previous rate and you’ll see the effectiveness of further increases in stroke rate decrease. This rate along with your CSS pace should give you a decent guide to what a good pace and stroke rate is for you currently. Happy training!
