This video could not have come at a better time as I am in a bit of a guitar funk as I type this. I'm reminded of my voice teacher (I wanted to learn to sing a little) and when we were in the studio he would say that the studio space was like a lab, made for experimentation, not judging. Thank you Jeff, you're a great teacher and motivator. Ok, it's time to practice and play now...

Know thyself" (Greek: Γνῶθι σαυτόν, gnōthi sauton).. “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” Aristotle.. "Music is a moral law. It gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, and life to everything. It is the essence of order, and leads to all that is good, just and beautiful, of which it is the invisible, but nevertheless dazzling, passionate, and eternal form (Attributed to Plato. Wordsworth Dictionary of Musical Quotations, 1991, p. 45).... Cheers Jeff! 🖖

That voice inside my head I call the critic. Not only does it show up when I’m playing but everywhere in my daily life. It’s taken me some time to recognize it and learn how to silence it. Once I learned the meditation technique to quiet it down self judgement and all the baggage that comes with shows up less. Jeff, you’re AWESOME!

Oh poop I commented and messed up posting it never mind, the essence of it was I love Jeff’s topics, as a no hopper 64 year old that enjoys playing and is not likely to achieve that much I find watching and listening to these words of wisdom helps to re enforce to keep going. Thank you

Love that you do videos about the core values of why we do things and the things about what that affects us all at all different ages. I know I can’t play like I’d like too now I am 64 and missed that boat ! But I still enjoy playing whatever. So advice Jeff gives is great life lessons and he always includes us all. Great job ❤️

Great advice. After getting back into guitar playing (after a 14 year hiatus) I had a rough time and tried to fill the void with gear. Happy to say that I have been employing this method for a while now and it really helps.

Love the backing track! I spent 10 minutes just noodling over it and sure enough - some funky new riffs came out and it got me out of a rut!!

Fabulous, Jeff! I use similar concepts for making drawings and design.

The older I get, the more I play. When you're not doing a band and feeling obliged to write a song whenever you pick it up you're free to just lose yourself in it

I’m the same now as I was in 1984 when I was playing the Crazy Train riff and Dokken Riffs over and over mindlessly. My Spark was Piney Bud apparently! But I like what you’re doing! My Foot pedal went dead in the middle of the Electric Eye solo at a huge event center. I unplugged and just plugged into the amp and picked right back up .

Makes great sense what your saying, I always watch Jeff Berlin videos, and he always expresses
the mistakes he makes. he says it's a good thing, and that guy is a genius, and i don't use that word very often.

Great topic, any more lessons on phrasing and expanding upon ideas would be awesome!

Thx Jeff...I'm in the process of trying to get myself 'out there' again after a long period at home after a fall on a concrete floor years ago...playing guitar has always meant soooo much to me. Slowly but surely...or unsure...I am beginning to feel the power of trying. Cheers, thank you for sharing and caring....💚☮️🎸

Jeff, Thank you. I'm a bass player who has been wanting play blues guitar for myself for a long time. I've taken lessons. I've practiced my scales. But I have never been able to get to the point that I could solo without it falling into what sounds like a baseline but 2 octaves higher. I bought a couple of your beginner blues courses at Truefire and whatever teaching method you have plus the technology to slow the examples down and stay in pitch as well as the ability to see the tab and what what you are doing on the fretboard has brought me forward in my guitar playing more in the last 3 months than in the 25 years previously. Again, Thank you.

Thank you for this! I highly recommend Kenny Werner’s book Effortless Mastery on this topic- a lot of us (at one time or another) lose that spark in comparing ourselves with others, or obsessively “needing to sound good”. His section early in the book about a mentor forcing him to abstain entirely from playing for a month (if I remember correctly), in lieu of just going out to listen and enjoy music, and his subsequent breaking out of his self-imposed judgmental chains, is especially poignant. Great playing as always!
