Dog food review: Purina One vs Purina Pro Plan: What is the difference between the brands?

Purina is a large pet food brand owned by the parent Company Nestle. In this brand there are many sub-brands that make up the whole Purina pet food line. But what is the difference between all the Purina brands? Basically it comes down to quality and marketing ( but mostly marketing). In this video we peruse the website and chat with Purina to see what the real difference is.

Dr. Rea thanks for the entertaining, unfiltered and down to earth review of these two products. It has been many years since having to research dog food and there is certainly a lot of brands and information out there in the wild. Frankly I feel like I have been down a rabbit hole and back weighing and considering all the products. This review is really helpful because you asked the question and provided some insight to Purina One and Pro Plan. Of the three levels of dog food, Chow, One and Pro Plan I think Purina One is a safe bet. It is certainly more affordable than ProPlan and Purina One has a lamb and rice puppy, Puppy Chow does not. Our breeder uses Puppy Chow and recommends Purina. So Purina One it is!

We feed both for our pup. We do the smartblend with salmon oil when we’re in a pinch and we do the proplan when we have coupons also with salmon oil. Our puppy LOVES it!

Hi yesterday I discovered your channel and it is excellent. I would love to hear your opinion about grain-free foods in relation to foods with grains, Taste of the Wild and Pro Life

Seems most dog foods even lamb and rice have some chicken meal. I contacted Purina to see if they had a completely chicken/chicken meal free product. I got a direct answer from Purina. Good news they make a Salmon and Rice product in the Pro Plan product line. Pro Plan Salmon and Rice is apparently free of chicken and chicken meal. This would seem to support the notion that ProPlan offers more specific and specialized ingredients.

Hi! Thank you for these videos. I have been feeding PPP sensitive skin and stomach for almost three years. first the puppy formula now adult. we discovered early on my dog has a poultry sensitivity and I can’t afford the prescription option. however, i recently fell into the marketing traps and switched to Open Farm. After seeing your recent video I don’t think they are the best option either :(. What concerns me is when trying to read the label and compare to your chart for the PPP, they only show min/max and I cant find the dry matter basis chart anywhere. Any idea where I can get that? Also, some things on your chart of nutrients aren’t listed on the guaranteed analysis at all (such as sodium or chloride) does that mean it’s bad? I’m truly at a loss 😭😭😭😭

Your videos are very educational. Can you compare purima pro plan vs purina one puppy food large breed. Can you also compare the winner of that with your blue diamond. I liked your review of the blues but I am wondering if it is the same quality for puppy food. Thank you!!

Hi I was wondering if you can do a review on puppy dry food. What's better between purina one and pro plan puppy. Thank you

How do you feel about the Purina Beyond line. It’s seems to have probiotics in it, whereas Purina ONE does not….🤔

The large bag of pro plan runs about $54.
My dogs love the adult pro plan. One is three (used to be on Purina 1) and the other is 10 (used to be on a grain free diet until my vet advised studies found it's not good for their heart and liver)
They love it dry and I've even found them trying to get into the bag for snack between meal times.
They're both doing great! No tummy problems and they always have well formed solid poops that are honestly about half as much compared to when I had them on previous brands/ types.
One note about the older dog pro plan formulas - Petco person said the elderly formula is lighter in calories to assist with maintaining healthy weight and added glucosamine for joint health. Petco advised that you can always give your dog glucosamine /vitamin E / cognitive (DHA and Omega-3) supplements. The same kind we take. No need to buy a dog specific supplement because they cost about twice as much and you can just mix the vities into their food.

Hey doc, just watched your video and enjoyed it. Finally someone who knows what they are talking about! I have just started watching these utube videos on pet food and it is tragic people who know very little are influencing people. I just retired from 34 years as a veterinary rep for Hills. Btw, I have asked Purina reps at conferences the differences of their diets. They will only answer it’s just different channels, grocery etc. even if you ask if cost was no issue, which food is the best, they will never answer you. Looking forward to watching more of your videos and hopefully agreeing with you!

My golden doodles have been on PPro Plan for 3 years. since they were 8 weeks. But they LOVE Purina One (I purchase POne at the dollar store if auto delivery is a couple days late) and they tear it up!! Now I feel like they don't really enjoy their Pro Plan. Idk what to do!!

What if a same brand has two foods one says ‘all life stages’ and ‘adult’ but the ‘all life stages’ has fewer calories ? What would be your suggestion for that ? For a dog that is prone to weight gain? Would the one that is basically puppy food still be better since it’s fewer calories than the stated ‘adult food’?

Wouldnt it be cheaper to get a vitamin E supplements to go along with the one plan than go with the pro plan
