The Armata is a new Russian heavy Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV). It is also referred as the T-15. Its development commenced in 2011. This heavy IFV was developed as a part of armored vehicle family. It is based on the same platform as the Armata main battle tank. First mock-up or prototype was completed in 2013. During the same year it was revealed to Russian military officials. This heavy IFV was first publicly revealed in 2015.
The T-15 Armata heavy IFV has an unusual layout with a front-mounted engine. Interestingly the Armata tank has a rear powerpack arrangement. It became an issue for designers in order to make a troop compartment in the rear part of the vehicle. So the heavy IFV has a swapped front end with the rear. It is driving backwards comparing with the original Armata MBT.
This armored vehicle is operated by a crew 3 men, including commander, gunner and driver. Crewmembers are located in the center of the vehicle, behind the front engine compartment. Troop compartment is located at the rear. It is unknown how many passengers this vehicle can carry. It is likely that this heavy IFV accommodates 6 to 7 dismounts. Troops egress and dismount via rear power-operated doors.
It has newly-developed base armor, made of steel, ceramics and other composite materials. Also it has Malakhit add-on explosive reactive armor, that is claimed to be of new generation. A front-mounted engine provides additional protection for the crew and passengers. As usual this armored vehicle is fitted with NBC protection and automatic fire suppression systems. It has been reported that it will be fitted with new Afganit active protection system. It also has a new countermeasures system that reduces the chance of being hit by enemy anti-tank guided missiles with semi-automatic guidance.
This new Russian vehicle outguns most current troop carriers, based on tank chassis. It has unmanned turret, armed with 30 mm cannon, coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun and 4 Kornet-M anti-tank missile launchers. The same turret is also used on the Kurganets-25. The cannon has an effective range of up to 4 km. There are 500 rounds for the main gun, including 160 armor-piercing and 340 high-explosive fragmentation rounds. Currently the Kornet-M is one of the deadliest anti-tank guided weapons. These missiles have a maximum range of 8-10 km and can also target helicopters.
Initially it has been reported that this armored vehicle is powered by an A-82-2 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 1 200 hp. It is a new-generation engine that is much more compact than previous Russian tank engines. However in 2019 information emerged that this heavy IFV is fitted with a more powerful A-85-3 engine, developing 1 500 hp. Interestingly this rating is for a peak power which would be used only during wartime and at a cost of extremely short service life. Normally this engine develops 1 350 hp. Engine is located at the front and provides additional protection for the crew and passengers. Vehicle has 7 roadwheels. This heavy IFV has a built-in self-entrenchment blade and can briefly dig itself a defensive position.

Hope you enjoy!!

Basically, I'd say they learned from BMP series... Those things had decent firepower to support the infantry when needed, but the protection was rather bad... That is why they used them for support rather than troop carriers, but that also meant attracting more enemy fire and combined with not much armor... Yeah... High losses... T-15 seems to address those issues. But I guess we won't know until it is actually used in real action...

4:34 the merkava has its own ifv counterpart in the Namer IFV which iirc was inspired by russia’s first “tank ifv” the BTR-T

I like that you are able to be fascinated and appreciative to tech regardless of the politics right now.

Thank you Matt... It's so refreshing to see Russian tanks with theire turrets still attached to them. A rare sight these days. No matter how heavily they are armored. Nothing a 2000 dollar dji drone couldn't solve.

The IDF pioneered this type of very heavy APC/IFV with Achzarit, Nakpadon and Namer. I'm very surprised it has taken this long for other nations to catch up. Similarly with the front engine MBT layout. There are many pros to having front mounted engines. The major con of poor driver vision is no longer an issue, with the introduction of cheap cameras and display screens. Driver vision can be better than ever before.

Just what they need, a vehicle to support another vehicle that they really havent fielded and probably wont

Matt it needs to be said that T14 didn’t break down in the parade the driver left the break on and that’s why they couldn’t tow it or put on a public towing display. Russia’s T14 has had an exceptional performance review and is combat ready in number now. Based on concealed mass manufacturing

Bruh, the merkava isn't meant to carry infantry your confusing it with the namer (and the new namer AFV version).
The merkava can swap its ammo rack for soldiers in case of urgent med evac, but not meant to be used as such only in last resort situation.

As for the new namer fighting vehicle version, it's armed with 30mm and spike missiles, both heavier armor and more armed than the t15 amata

All in all the armata platform is a very interesting prototype, all the derived vehicles are very well designed concepts. Would they ever see mass production? I doubt it very much.

The concept, considering Russia's military priorities, is great. The issues will arise on the back end though. Can they produce enough of them to matter? Can they support it once it's been deployed? These things are very important and based on the current performance of their military it's looking like the answers to those questions will be a hard "No."

Russia has proven that while the philosophy of Quality over Quantity does hold merit, they have also proven that they are unwilling or unable to field the cost of such advanced units. Not even counting the sanctions, the T-14 has sat in Limbo for over half a decade and has now gotten to the point that, Russia wants to sell it for export without any battlefield testing. I think the T-15 looks amazing and if all of these advancements are accurate (because we all know the, Russians would never overstate the capabilities of their equipment) then it is a pretty amazing piece of equipment. I just can't see, Russia fielding these in any numbers that will matter. I could see the West utilizing something like this but again in small numbers. The forward blade reminds me of the G6 Rhino which has always looked and performed wonderfully. I wasn't paying attention but what were the measurements? Looks pretty damned big for deep penetration into urban areas.

Wheres all the Soviet throbbers these days ?? I miss reading that the mig 21 would beat a f22 or the t72 would destroy a m1 abrams

The T-14 didn't brake down during the parade.
The driver was inexperienced with the tank and left the brake on without knowing.
If you watch the full video the tank drives away fine.

Actually this IFV would be the equivalent of the Israeli NAMER IFV, that is based on the MERKAVA tank and not the tank itself. The MERKAVA can carry four troops in the back if the ammunition stored there is not carried and this is probably a feature to allow the evacuation of an other tank's crew in an emergency, rather than carry fighting troops although it is possible.

Comparing it to the Boxer AFV variant with a 120mm gun, weighs 45 tons and can carry 4-6 troops...IF I was an armoured brigade commander (which I'm very definitely not) I'd want a vehicle that enabled my infantry to keep up with the tanks, with decent protection and not get in the way...T-15 seems to do this neatly.
