How to Replace a Bathroom Sink Drain

How to replace a sink drain.

Replacing your sink drain is actually quite simple, you don't have to call a plumber. Bathroom sink drains often look worn out and can develop rust over time and can make your sink look dirty.

All you will need is a pair of plumber's pliers and a container to catch water.

You start by loosening the nuts to remove the previous drain pipe. Once the old drain is completely removed, you can slide your new drain through the top and connect it to your u-pipe.

In this video I needed to grab an extender because my drain was not long enough. If your new drain is not the correct size for your pipe, you can acquire the right adapter to install.

I couldn't figure out why the drain stopper wouldn't come out of the sink until I saw that you unscrew the top piece from the actual pipe 🙃 feel so dumb but this video saved me a lot more trouble. Thanks!😊

The part that you skipped is the ONLY part I needed to see.

Perfect. You even have the same new black drain stopper I picked. I can do this!

That looked pretty easy. I'm sure I'll have a flood or broken sink in no time. ; )

This is super helpful! Other videos dont get into the actual p trap. I have steel pipes so was nervous on how to connect the plastic delta drain to the steel p trap.

The top chrome plated flange is threaded and is frozen to the top threads of the sink tail piece that goes down through the sink. Either the previous owner glued that top flange piece on or it's rusted in place. Either way, you didn't show anything in the video about how you removed yours.

Oh no, this is not good, you skipped over the most important part, the part I came here to see. How did you get the inside unstuck? Why did you omit the most crucial part? I'm pretty sure that most of us are smart enough to figure out all the rest, we were hoping that you could help with that one thing that you skipped over. 😂

Had to go out to Home Depot for a part. Do you know how many times this has happened to me. I learned basic plumbing in a trade high school. That and some electrician and carpenter stills have saved me at least 20K over the past 20 years.

I figured out how to do what he didn't show. I took a pair of needle nose pliers and stuck it into the drain into one of the little holes after I had unscrewed the bottom part is much as I could. Once putting the needle nose into the drain and into one of the side holes that is visible now that I unscrew the bottom part enough, I'm able to hold it still and unscrew it.

I'm going to do it today, hope I'll be successful like you.😊

How I misses your videos!!! You make it look so easy. Two comments: 1) I'm glad you wear gloves; 2) you have an Escher in your bathroom?! Fancy!

So your replacement downpipe doesn't have the drain stopper switch?

If your top half is spinning while twisting the straight pipe, I gripped the upper with a pair of pliers while twisting the pipe and it came loose for me

What about the Part that Locks the Pipes since I can't take out the Sink it self cause the Cold & Hot Pipes wouldn't turn off

Where the bottom gasket (just above the brass nut) goes into the bottom of sink from underneath, any need for silicon and sealant there?

Good job, but you dont need the Teflon, the fittings are water tight.
