Mysterious brain disease emerges in New Brunswick: What doctors know so far

Public health officials in Canada are closely monitoring a mysterious brain disease that has emerged out of New Brunswick. It's not known what is causing the disorder or where it came from, but a cluster of more than 40 cases have already been confirmed in the Atlantic province, with 5 deaths associated with it since the first case in 2015.

Researchers investigating the mysterious neurological syndrome say a potential cause may be some kind of environmental exposure.

Dr. Alier Marrero, neurologist at Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre, gives us more details on what we know about the mysterious disease.

I remember when the UK had a Mad Cow (BSE) outbreak and they said that 1 in 2000 people were carriers and many would develop vCJD due to the exposure in time, with no one knowing who would and wouldn't eventually get sick, nor how long it would take, but they said about 15 years.

Canada has been a "controlled risk" country for BSE since 2007. Our feed ban on reconstituted animal parts for growth happened in 1997. There's research that says it's possible for heifers to pass BSE onto calves, so it's possible that it's being passed around. It's important to note that not all beef in Canada is tested for BSE due to constraints of time, finance, etc. It is hypothetically possible to get infected meat. Canada has found 18 cases of BSE in cattle since 2003, but they say none entered the human food chain.

I don't know why I haven't seen anyone bring this up, it's highly possible he ate contaminated beef over 15 years ago and now encephalopathy is taking over his brain. I think it's worth looking into.

Canada has said they've prevented BSE infected cattle from entering the human food chain, but who knows where this guy has been in the past decade and a half, he could've easily gotten it here, the US, the UK... It takes like 15 years for the bomb to go off inside you. I think it's worth a look, even if it's not what's happening.

There are places in Ontario and BC that have similar things happen from a toxin in the soil. Not in industrial or developed areas, just a natural thing in the ground from mushrooms. People were getting it from gardening out in bush areas. It will be interesting to see what they find out about this.
