SUMMARY:
- The Japanese government has over 8 million properties throughout the country that they’re willing to either sell or give away for free!
- In fact, according to The Japan Times, 1 in 10 houses in or on the outskirts of the country’s huge capital city Tokyo is empty.
- Japan has a quickly ageing population: a lot of people are either passing away or moving into retirement homes, leaving their houses empty.
- Japanese are rather superstitious and don’t wanna live in houses with a sad history. No one is willing to buy homes where there was a tragedy or someone died.
- If you don’t have too much cash to spare, note that you can buy an abandoned house in Ollolai, Sardinia for as low as $1.25.
- The long-term goal here is to bring life and tourists back to those areas that are currently dying out.
- You can choose from hundreds of cute little villages in the northwest region of Galicia for a pretty affordable average asking price of $100,000.
- A lot of the prospective buyers are families that emigrated from Spain in the ‘60s and would like to go back to their roots and just enjoy the relaxing peaceful country life.
- When you get bored with civilization and wanna experience some island paradise, head to Pitcairn. The weather’s always nice, and you’ll only have about 50 neighbors on the whole island!
- Aspiring farmers are welcome to get their land in Crown Lands, Yukon. The condition here is that you have to be a Canadian citizen and a resident of Yukon for at least 2 years.
- From Kansas to Alaska, there are areas where you can get a plot of land or even a house for free or close to nothing. Some of them are being given away by the government in hopes of finding people to sponsor renovation and maintenance of an abandoned home.

I have bought 5 homes in recent years with little or no down that needed a lot of work. I had no credit except for bad credit from medical bills we couldn’t pay. They are widely available in smaller towns at least 50 miles away from any urban area. Banks won’t usually finance a house in such a condition because they can’t profit from getting stuck with it. There are a lot of property owners out there who are willing to carry the note because they can’t get rid of them any other way. Do it this way and you won’t get stuck with a limited time to renovate and best of all no back property taxes. You can fix it up any way you want because it’s yours. They usually don’t cost much either. The payment is generally a lot less than apartment rent.

Remember he did say pay all the taxes. Some of the taxes in the USA are so high people just said enough is enough packed and moved on. NJ is really high for a house that cost 80.000 40 years ago the taxes now on it is well over 100.000 a year. Yes so a house can be free but you will pay so much in the back taxes and the future taxes. Not to mention the cost to fix a place up do all the Plumbing electrical fix the roof so on and deal with Black mold. Most of the northern states/ countries pipes will freeze up. Critters will live in the house over time because it will keep them safe yet will really cost a lot to fix.

Even if they are free, you need to deal with the VISAs to actually use it. For Japan you will need either a Work visa which requires a 4 year university degree, or a spouse visa to stay there long term. A travel visa will let you stay in country for 90 days. Not to mention Japanese homes are not made to last and if they are older than ~30 years, to live in them legally would require renovations more than likely. Lastly cancer, that whole Fukushima thing people tend to ignore sort of is still ongoing and will be for decades.

Abandoned, means back taxes, upgrades cause you'll have to bring every thing up to modern building codes, unless it is old enough to use a grandfather clause, but that means old enough to have some real repair/remodel problems.

When something is wrong, there is a crisis, etc, things are so easy to come by or get. On the other hand, when something is popular or everybody wants it, it will cost you A LOT of money. Believe me, there is always a catch, and people cannot be trusted. What a greedy world in which we live.
