port tack starts are just so so strong in AC sailing. idk why more teams don't go for em in the match racing either. you get overspeed, all the boats are basically on time so not much risk of being too late, and then you're sailing in clear air coming back with rights on starboard. and cause the crosses are so hard to call in these boats people just play it conservative and tack under even if they might be crossing. if you watch it back Spain didn't even execute it perfectly but still made every boat tack under them, basically risk free, while the boats on starboard can only have 1-2 winners so even if you get a good starboard tack start it's a 50/50 if you get flushed or not. the boats on starboard are also forced to sail a non vmg mode because they have to hold a lane so they need to go high, yet another advantage.
