Alan Wilder was more than the half of DM musical existence. But Gore seems to ignore that.

That song... I haven't heard it in so long. I was a foreign exchange student in Arkansas in 1992, I was from Venezuela. My house was in a field, it was a farm. I met this girl from Germany, she was another exchange student from Brandenburg... Steffi. One day I got chickenpox. And she went to visit me, she came to my room, it was about 4 or 5 pm. I just remembered it was night, no light in my room except from the clock and whatever light came from the window, moonlight. I placed this CD and we started to listen to it.

I sort of push her against the wall or something, I was kissing her neck, the pushed me to the bed and told me in her sweet German accent "You are sick", and she jumped on me. We were devouring each other during the entire album until this song came. I remember kissing her and grabbing her body and when the choir was saying "if you want my love" she was whispering yes, yes!

By the time the album was over, we were both gone, exhausted, we were just souls. That album is a very deep trip and we really lose it. Depeche Mode was not normal. Songs of Faith and Devotion was not normal.

I did not like SOFAD in 1993 when it was released but it slowly became one of my favorites after 25 years. It’s aged the best and this song is one of my favorites.

Alan Wilder turned all the demos that Martin Gore gave him into perfect music... And Judas is perfect.

Martin wanted "Judas" to sound like Reggie, but Alan disagreed and elevated this song to the next level with his signature sound haunting bass-line ending. I'm glad Alan's version made it to the album making this song one of the best and sadly the last songs sung by Martin for the album and properly arranged. From what I recall the disagreement between Martin and Alan over this song was immense with Fletcher dispatched to the rescue to mediate and settle the dust down.

Martin was/is a great songwriter, however it was Alan’s superior musical knowledge that would take the songs to the next level. This has been heavily documented, and I fact you see a clear difference in the quality of the music after he left.
Martin has said on multiple occasions that he did not enjoy the process in the studio, this is in part because it is a tedious process, conversely Alan has expressed that writing lyrics and melody was never his forte. They made the perfect team, and it saddens me to the core that they no longer work together. If you combine the song writing of Ultra with the musical landscape style of Unsound Methods by Recoil, you’d have a master piece.

I've heard a few demos. Never heard the reggae version but maybe thats a good thing. Really great story..can't wait til you cover To Have and To Hold. There were creative differences there for sure as well.

La Genialità di Martin Gore è pari alla sua stupidità inducendo Alan ad abbandonare il gruppo
