After reading a scathing editorial review regarding her singing performance at the play, MJ turns to Peter for consolation, with disappointing results.

MJ: “This isn’t about you, it’s about me”

Bully Maguire: I missed the part where the movie’s called “Mary-Jane”

This feels like a real scene to be honest. The way the two actors interact is so realistic.

I think after 14 years I finally understood that scene. Peter was right, you can't focus on critics when you're doing your job. He turned the conversation to himself because he experienced it for years before the city finally embraced him as a hero. He experienced it and he overcame it. MJ is angry because she thinks it's not that simple and Peter is not listening to her. Don't care about the critics and do your job. In fact it is that simple and simultanously it's not. When you hear a bad review, you start doubting yourself - no matter how many great reviews there are. That first review hit MJ hard and I understand her. You think you are talentless and it would be better to stop doing what you do. But there comes another day and you feel that you have to still do what you do, because you love it so hard.
Getting to the meritum: I think that if that conversation was longer, MJ would have understood what Peter was saying. It didn't because Spider-man was needed - Peter's responsibility and his curse. It's incredible what you can see from the film that is right now 14 years old. That's when you realise it might be timeless (even if the parts of the film may suck).

This actually bothers me, he’s trying to empathise with her and is trying to support her and she is throwing it in his face. Like that scene when Spider-Man is swinging past and people are cheering him and not her, it’s because Peter still does his job despite being slammed down by the daily bugle. She needs to realise that not everybody is going to like her, and she shouldn’t blame the critic, maybe she should consider that the critic could be right, and should improve.

Peter: MJ, the movie is called "Spiderman" not "Mary jane"

I know most people hate MJ because they have a one sides view on this. But man, did Sam Raimi give us a realistic take on relationships.

Peter: “It’s something you gotta get used to. Believe me I know, Spider-Man gets attacked all the time”
MJ: “This isn’t about you, this is about me”
*Peter then tries to give more words of encouragement*
MJ again: “Don’t give me the horse thing! Try to understand how I feel”

See what’s wrong with this scene and character? People always praise MJ and Peter in these movies but after the first film MJ became a manipulative jealous jerk. This version of her is the reason I hated the character until I actually read some comics and watched the TV shows. The Rami trilogy gave us a butchered rude Mary Jane after the first film. Their relationship is a broken unhappy mess now and the final dance did nothing to make me like them ever again, especially when she does the whole “there’s someone else” routine instead of warning Peter later on. Ridiculous

I think the reason why MJ is upset with Peter here is because she thinks he's trivializing the issue and making it out to be no big deal when in her mind it is. She wanted him to say 'that's awful MJ, I'm sorry people are saying these things. It's tough facing criticism' but instead he acts like there's no problem at all and tells her to get over it. I guess sometimes it's better to accept a difficult situation for what it is rather than downplay it.

But don't get me wrong I also understand where Peter is coming from. Critics will always have something bad to say and you can't control what people think of you.

I literally tried to find this scene just to say the gall MJ had by dismissing Peter trying to relate to her by bringing up the terrible things that some critics say about Spider-Man.

Um I understand you're trying to have a career, while Spider-Man is a job Peter does for free. But ITS BECAUSE he does it for free is why him giving you advice on not letting *a* critic get you down is why you *should*. I like to think mj was low-key jealous of Peter as while there are many people who genuinely dislike to hate Spider-Man there are those who genuinely love and care about him too. While mj only had a few people she could say that really cared for her for her not because she's "pretty".

I still fail to understand why people say Peter was an asshole to her when she straight up tells him "this isnt about you its about me". I get that she had a bad father but still she fails to see how she is treating peter.
