China has justified the recent military drills it conducted around Taiwan. The two-day exercises came days after Lai Ching-te took over as Taiwan’s president. China considers him a separatist.

The military exercises were a "just" action, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office has said.

China’s military simulated attacks with bombers and practised boarding ships. Taiwan says they were more about propaganda and intimidation than starting a war.

As long as Taiwan independence provocations continue, PLA’s military actions will continue too, China says.

China views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory. Xi Jinping hasn’t rule out the use of force to bring the island under China’s control.

Taiwan President Lai Ching-te rejects China's sovereignty claims, saying only Taiwan's people can decide their future, and has repeatedly offered talks with Beijing but been rebuffed.

Taiwan has long rejected China’s one country two systems model under which the mainland governs Hong Kong.
