Nelson RainTrain Traveling Sprinkler Disassembly and Maintenance

I really like these traveling "tractor" style sprinklers, but like everything that has moving parts, theyt do need to be maintained. A little cleaning, a little grease. Not much required, but these sprinklers aren't cheap, so a few minutes spent cleaning grime might save a lot of money replacing parts.

I haven't used my tractor sprinkler in about 3 years and bought it used 15 years ago. I wanted to use it this week for a long piece of new grass. Hooked it up but the arms wouldn't swing. I used this video to look what I needed to do to repair this. The brass potion had old sticky grease on the shaft. I wiped it off and applied silicon grease. It's light weight and very slippery. Hooked it bask up and works like a champ.

Nice, I have 3 or 4 of these in work most every summer, now I know I don’t have to replace the wheel caps ever time a gear box goes out . Thanks

FYI, pretty much all the internal gears can be 3D printed. I had the exact same gear you did lose teeth and 3D printed one swapped it out, works fine.

Your video was very helpful & easy to follow. I'm going to try to fix mine that we buy for $10. We have hard water, thinking the rust is binding up the gears. Would a rust removal help the gears of rust is a problem?..

You skipped the most important part. I believe you had to go down the discharge wormscrew drive with a hex wrench to detach it? Also, does the shut-off valve in the bottom actually just separate, as shown? It's a better video than most. Thanks.

How does the water flow propel it? Is it just the angle of the tubes? Physics?

I have two of these sprinklers. One is old the other will be the second summer I've had it, purchased brand new. In both of them the plug on the bottom that shuts them off when they go up the ramp blew out. Everything else works fine. One plug is lost I have the other one. How can I make it stay in ??

One of the arms on mine does not spray out water. I took it off, ran a pipe cleaner through and ran water from the faucet through so it doesn’t seem to be clogged. Any ideas what the issue would be? Thank you!

Ok, I have a new one. The arms spin, water pressure is good, but the wheels are locked, and the stopper freely pops up and down (don’t know if that matters as it is not pressurized when I’ve tested the stopper). Is there something I am missing? Do the wheels need to be unlocked somehow?

How do you stop water leaking out where the hose attaches to the sprinkler? I have added a rubber washer inside the fitting to stop leakage without any success. Water continues to leak by and tractor won’t travel.

Well, here I am 10 months later, and the gear I 3D printed stripped like 4 teeth. I used 100% infill, (basically printed it solid), with PLA. This time, I reduced the infill to 20%, and I used PLA “pro”. The teeth are still pretty much solid. I figure, even if I have to reprint one every spring for the rest of my days, I will never spend in filament what a whole new gear box costs.

Mine has what I consider an excessive amount of water dribbling out the bottom of the sprinkler, and therefore not spraying out the spray arms. The result is a lot of water pooling and draining along the track of the sprinkler. (The spray arms are spraying, and the sprinkler is moving forward, but not as fast perhaps as it should.) Is this normal?? Any ideas how to correct it? Thank you!
