Paramilitary is the special trained defence personnel from all three categories ( army.airforce, navy) to combat terrorism, disaster management, and all type of harsh situations.

paramilitary is an organization whose structure, tactics, training, subculture, and (often) function are similar to those of a professional military, but is not part of a country's official or legitimate armed forces.

In India usually Paramilitary forces are under the Home Ministry of India not under Defence Ministry...Some of them are 1)Assam Rifles- service area (India-Myanmar border areas)
2) BSF (Border Security Force) Service area - India - Pakistan and India China border areas.
3) ITBP - Indo Tibetan Border Police.. Service area (Indo China Border)
4). CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force ) - Service area ( Counter insurgency and election Violence duty areas)
5.CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) - Usually seen in protection of PSU organisations like AAI(Airport Authority of India)...OIL( Oil India Ltd)
6.NSG- An elite special force engaged in counter insurgency operations to handle special domestic insurgency operations .Like The Taj Mumbai attacka of 26/11..

All these forces are governed under Ministry of Home affairs where as Indian Army, Indian Airforce and Indian Navy are all under MOD(Ministry of Defence).

Other paramilitary forces like RPF(Railway Protection Force) are under Ministry of Railways..They protect and safeguard railway infrastructure like railway stations, railway project sites etc.

Other than that we also have SPG( Special protection Group) ..This group consists of officers from Indian Armed forces who are engaged in protection of our Prime Minister..

SPG is also under Ministry of Home Affairs...I hope that clarifies the importance of Paramilitary forces in India..
