Have politics and science replaced religion?

JNS editor-in-chief Jonathan Tobin is joined by scholar and host of Young Heretics podcast Spencer Klavan, author of the new book How to Save the West, Ancient Wisdom for Five Modern Crises.

Klavan posits that at a time when free speech and basic principles of equality and liberty are under attack from woke progressives, the best answer to the crisis may not be so much political as it is educational and spiritual.

They discuss
- science, politics and woke ideology replacing G-d in society
- the relevance and importance of ancient philosophy and faith to contemporary problems.

Much better than I expected.

Only I don't get why he calls this current madness "pagan." Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, whom he mentions, were pagan. A huge part of our Western civilization came from pagans.

Another thing is that many things he talks about as Western are really universal. They exist wherever there is wisdom. For example, the body and soul working together. In China from the most ancient times body and soul of any living creature were together. The body was from the Earth, and the soul was from Heaven. But when the creature died, the soul went back to Heaven, and the body went back to Earth. So life is this messy arrangement of body and soul, both not quite where they belong, working together; but the arrangement where everything is just and neatly classified and located where it belongs is death.

If this sounds familiar, it's because it's universal.

About the multiverse: it is at the moment a scientific hypothesis. It is losing popularity, thanks largely to Sabine Hossenfelder. Whether it is true or not nobody knows. But what Hollywood does with it is another story altogether. No one should mistake Hollywood's crazy interpretations for the real science.

Finally, I don't share his optimism. Putting much hope into traditional local associations is a pure fantasy. After the "fortified" 2020 election, the US is no longer a republic. In addition to the spiritual rot he talks about here, there is plenty of more material rot. The geopolitical situation is very dangerous, and getting worse.

You want woke gone amok? From Channel 14 comes a doozy of an example:
After releasing a rapist with the determination that the rape was not violent: a sharp complaint against Judge Kabob
"The man is not fit to serve as a judge, not even in peace and certainly not in the upper echelon, " wrote today the CEO of Betsalmo Shai Glick in response to Judge Khaled Kabov's ruling according to which a young Arab man from Jerusalem who raped a young Jewish woman - will be released to his home.
This morning (Wednesday) on the release of Muhammad Tawil, a 23-year-old resident of Jerusalem for probation, after brutally raping a young woman in the horse park in the center of the city. This, after the district court sent him to detention until the end of the proceedings, and despite the opposition of the prosecutor's office to the request. Judge Khaled Kabov from the Supreme Court reasoned his decision: "Apparently, the appellant carried out his actions without using significant physical violence."

And despite this, he writes in his decision the shocking sentence and I quote 'the fact that appears that the appellant committed his actions without the use of significant physical violence.'
Furthermore, Glick wondered in his letter: "I am shocked at what the Honorable Judge Kebob says. The rape was easy. How can a person say such a thing? The rape of a woman is like murder. But in the judge's eyes it is minor. Not violent. What does the victim think now? What Do you think women who go through rape and sexual harassment? Can such a person discuss these cases?".
