What Is A Widget On Android?

In this video, I talk about what an Android widget is and show you some examples of what they can do. An Android widget is an app that can run on your home screen without having to be opened up or even attached to any standalone app.

For example, a power control widget allows you to toggle certain wireless connections on and off without it being attached to any app in particular. Yet there are times when a widget is attached to a standalone app, like the scorecenter app which shows you game scores on your homescreen that can lead to opening the full on app when you tap on it.

Why are widgets a good thing? Because they make things or information easier to get to on your Android phone. Want the score to the game? Just look at your widget, no need to open (and wait for) the full app. Want to turn off Wi-Fi? Just tap on the wifi icon in your power control widget instead of having to go through the settings. You get the idea. It just makes things much more convenient.

I'm glad no one actually what the time was you would tell them how to build a watch

Yeah that can be one of the downsides of having lots of widgets, especially if a majority of them pull some data from the internet. But having a few shouldn't hurt battery life too much.

Thanks. I was wondering what these things are. :)

Yeah, it is the stock ICS widget. Looks a lot better than the one on 2.3 and below, doesn't it?

I'm still waiting for you to tell me what a widget is, because I don't have ANY of the things on my screen that you have on yours! What I'm trying to do seems so simple, yet videos like yours make it things more and more confusing. Thanks, but no thanks.

I still don't fundamentally understand what it is beyond an Icon... where do they live? These smartphones are already heavily littered with Icons, no ???

Nice vid! Now I know what a widget is and what it may do in the background (suck data), so no thanks to using them. I assume apps remain just icons that do not suck data until you click on it. Is there a way to turn off all widgets w/o going to each individually? I've been watching my data usage and it steadily rises with UTube the biggest offender.

Apparently these widgets must occupy some space as well as apps.
