My mom stopped speaking Spanish because she was brutally bullied for English being her 2nd language. She didn’t teach us Spanish because she was protecting us. I am not mad at her in the slightest, but knowing the language would greatly help me speak to all my relatives!

Agreed. I get so embarrassed as an adult for not being able to speak my languages😂

I am half russian half Moroccan. I ALWAYS lived in Morocco but We spoke russian at home, I spoke Moroccan/ arabic at school and with friends, I watched spanish tv shows because my mom couldn't learn Moroccan to speak with the locals and they all knew spanish, when I was 8 I also learnt french. Then english in High school. I am so grateful to my parents for putting me in such conditions to learn all these languages. I am not good at all of them obviously but I can understand and communicate still in all of them.

I was blessed to have my mom and dad both speaking spanish at home when I was younger so I can speak both english and spanish very well and I’m very grateful I can talk with my
family members when I go visit them

Sort of the same for me. I moved away from my home country, which was the Philippines, at around 5 yrs old. So my parents wouldn’t speak much Tagalog to me but would speak Tagalog to each other and my older brother. So I somehow adapted and learned to listen and understand instead of speak my native tongue. But as I got older, I started speaking Tagalog but only know the basics (still pretty broken Tagalog but enough to communicate).

It’s like this weird super power I have and serves me pretty well since I can listen in to all the gossip whenever my mom is on the phone with the aunties lol.

I feel this in my soul. My mom stopped speaking her native language to my sister and I. I assume it's because she was worried about us being made fun of or for having an accent... now as an adult I struggle to find my place with my culture, but I stead am focusing on living the best life I can with what I have

I just got lucky, my mom taught me urdu and my dad taught me farsi. I lived in India & Iran for a few years then we moved to America. So im thankfully trilingual, im very grateful they both taught me their languages. 😅

I feel like I’m so un-indian because I can’t speak Hindi or Tamil and I’ve never lived there either, but I don’t feel connected enough to the places I’ve actually lived 😭
