Torrential downpours have unleashed major flash flooding in Colorado leaving at least three people dead and a road collapsed. Thousands of people have been forced to flee in Boulder and surrounding cities. A road near Boulder crumbled under the sheer force of a raging river. Three cars plunged into the waters but the drivers managed to be rescued and only suffered minor injuries.

The unusually heavy late-summer rains have drenched a stretch of Colorado up to 130 miles long along the eastern slopes of the Rockies.

Police said evacuations might be expanded later because of a separate dam breach at a retaining pond in the nearby Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge. Report by Ashley Fudge.
