Spyro Gyra - Morning Dance

1st track from "Morning Dance" (1979). Something magical happened in the summer of 1979, when a catchy pop-jazz tune was released on an album with an imaginative cover illustration by a band with a name that was a misspelling of a type of green algae. Go figure! Somehow smooth jazz, gorgeous botanical illustrations, and ancient folklore came together to make Fairy Spying a thing, an international craze in the minds of millions. It's the perfect thing to do on a lazy summer day or a day like today—the first official day of spring—when the grass is amazingly green and soon-to-be too high but just right for hiding those colorful Easter eggs from eager kids, grandkids, nieces, and nephews.

This was it—THE smooth jazz album. Before Kenny G, before Richard Elliot, before (m)any of the others, this album defined the smooth jazz sound. And it is as fresh a sound today as it was when it came out—really!

Morning Dance was released as a single in 1979 and became a Top 40 hit in the United States where it remained for eight weeks, peaking at number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in July 1979.

Spyro Gyra is an American jazz fusion band that was originally formed in the mid-1970s in Buffalo, New York, United States. Their music, often featured on smooth jazz radio stations, combines jazz with elements of R&B, funk and pop music. To date, the band has released over 30 albums and sold over 10 million copies. They average about 100 live performances per year.

The band's name is a misspelling of Spirogyra [reportedly due to a club owner's mistake], a genus of green algae, which Jay Beckenstein had written about in a college biology paper.

The album cover of Morning Dance had concept origination, design and art direction by Peter Corriston. Illustration by David Heffernan. The package design was nominated for a Grammy award.

One of the all time greats. Saw SG live many times and will never tire of hearing them perform “Morning Dance” or any song they ever performed. An American musical treasure in every way!

A unique moment in 1970s music. I was 14 when this came out, and decades later I can sing along with the entire thing, solos included, almost note for note. I have to make an effort to shut my mouth if I'm with other people, to avoid irritating the hell out of them! This music is embedded in my soul.

As a child of the 70's was this the weekend anthem at home. And many many years after it still sounds as fresh as the first time I heard it as a child.
