Menorrhagia can be classified into two main types: primary and secondary. Primary menorrhagia occurs on its own without any other medical conditions causing it, often due to hormonal imbalances. Secondary menorrhagia results from an underlying medical issue such as uterine fibroids, polyps, thyroid disorders, or bleeding disorders.
Treatment for menorrhagia depends on its cause and severity.
Medications like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can reduce blood loss and pain. Hormonal treatments, including birth control pills, progesterone, or hormonal IUDs, help regulate menstrual cycles and reduce bleeding. In more severe cases, surgical options such as endometrial ablation (removal of the uterine lining), myomectomy (removal of fibroids), or even hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) may be considered. The goal is to reduce menstrual bleeding, alleviate symptoms, and improve the patient's quality of life.
Dr. Isha Rani, Consultant Obstetrics and Gynecology, Laparoscopic surgeon, Asarfi Hospital, Jharkhand, explains to us the types and treatments for menorrhagia.
