Σύμφωνα με τη παράδοση στο σημείο όπου βρίσκεται σήμερα ο Άγιος Αθανάσιος,του οποίου υπόγειο παρεκκλήσι είναι ο Άγιος Χαράλαμπος (πανηγυρίζει στις 10 Φεβρουαρίου)υπήρχε σπηλιά όπου ήταν μεσα κρυμμένες δυο εικόνες των Αγίων. Ενω οι κάτοικοι τις έπαιρναν απο κει επειδη ηταν γκρεμός αυτες επέστρεφαν πίσω στη σπηλιά. Αργότερα όταν ήρθε η ώρα της ονοματοδοσίας του πρώτου ναού έγινε τριπλή κλήρωση και τις τρεις φορες βγήκε το όνομα του Αγίου Αθανασίου. Ο προηγούμενος ναός έπεσε το 1966 λογω σεισμου και ανεγέρθηκε ο τωρινός ναός με την διαφορά οτι ανεγέρθηκε κι υπόγειος ναός προς τιμη του Αγίου Χαραλάμπους και το τέμπλο του οποίου είναι το τέμπλο του πρώτου ναού του Αγίου Αθανασίου.Ο τωρινός ναός είναι τρισυπόστατος και εγκαινιάστηκε στις 18 Μαϊου 2008 απ' το Μακαριστό Μητροπολίτη Αιτωλίας και Ακαρνανίας Κοσμά και πανηγυρίζει στις 18 Ιανουαρίου

According to tradition, at the place where Saint Athanasios is today, whose underground chapel is Saint Haralambos,(celebrates on February 10th)there was a cave where two icons of the Saints were hidden inside. While the inhabitants were taking them from there because it was a cliff, they were returning back to the cave. Later, when the time came for the naming of the first church, a triple draw took place and the name of Saint Athanasios came out three times. The previous church fell in 1966 due to an earthquake and the current church was built with the difference that an underground church was built in honor of Saint Haralambos and whose iconostasis is the iconostasis of the first church of Saint Athanasios.The current church is three-aisled and was inaugurated on May 18, 2008 by the late Metropolitan of Aetolia and Acarnania Kosmas and celebrates on January 18
