Totally agree. Would love to see HX bindings everywhere. Not holding my breath, but would love it.

This is really spot on, I'm having a easy time remembering the bindings of Helix and albeit I'm not too fast, I'm at least on the same level or faster in some things than using VS Code after 1 month of using Helix. I tried Helix because of a coworker that uses Neovim and his argument was basically the same as Prime, that Helix would be more easy to beginners because of it being more feature packed than normal Neovim, and a week after I decided to try it, and then found your channel and helped me migrate from VS Code. Maybe in the future I'll try Neovim, but the little that I used, some bindings does not wrap well in my head.

I've been using helix for the past 8 months, but recently came overseas so i don't have mu ergo keyboard with my laptop. This made me try switching to Zed, which has been really refreshing to have a file tree and stuff, but I'd still love to use helix key bindings in zed that would be incredible

I have tried the helix keybindings for vscode and they were at first sluggish, but then they got better to the point where they are very usable unti you try to close a tab or save. You have to resort to ctrl w and ctrl s. Not a deal breaker, but then one of the reasons I love helix is the 5 lines for the entire config. No setting up extensions and navigating the config options in search of something. To me helix is perfect as is to the point where I don't even need extensions and the gui.

Do you recommend a particular VS Code extension for Helix bindings?

I have mixed feelings about the possibility of Zed getting Helix bindings.

I've been really happy with Helix because of the minimalist config, and the fast "speed" curve. I have a tendency to get distracted by shiny new text editors (and Zed is VERY shiny right now), but Helix's bindings have keep me loyal to it because switching between Vim and Helix bindings in different editors is a fast path to insanity.

I really want a "forever" editor, and Helix feels like it fits the bill. I've built too many vim/neovim lightsabers only for them to get buried at the bottom of a drawer, and finding them broken because of the wrong ruby version or something when I go to use them again.

Kakoune based motions are the motions that make sense. Selection -> action not the other way around

Why does the speed curve of helix flatten compared to vim? They both use roughly the same amount of keystrokes / combinations to get the same thing done right?

Wait what’s your escape command do? Normal mode and something with cancelling the cursor? What does that mean exactly

I'm with you. vim bindings are terrible. I first used vim over 35 years ago - after I had already leant to touch type. I started as a systems admin and thus I use the lowest common denominator - vim & default key bindings (nano is sh#t) - everywhere because I'm constantly accessing unfamiliar systems. Generally I don't install software on those systems (it's not worth the hassle) so I use vim, bash, sed and friends. Helix is probably the only software that I would consider installing on a system, even one rarely used, because it makes me much more productive. The key-binding juice is worth the installation squeeze.

Helix bindings are clearer and, like you, I don't have to go back to manual for really basic stuff. Easy to build on the current binding knowledge too. I want helix bindings everywhere.
