"Sophisticated Lady" is a jazz standard, composed as an instrumental in 1932 by Duke Ellington and Irving Mills, to which words were added by Mitchell Parish. The words met with approval from Ellington, who described them as "wonderful—but not entirely fitted to my original conception."
Sophisticated Lady was an LP album by Julie London, released by Liberty Recordsunder catalog number LRP-3203 as a monophonic recording and catalog number LST-7203 in stereo in 1962.
They say into your early life romance came
And in this heart of yours burned a flame
A flame that flickered one day and died away
Then, with disillusion deep in your eyes
You learned that fools in love soon grow wise
The years have changed you, somehow
I see you now
Smoking, drinking, never thinking of tomorrow, nonchalant
Diamonds shining, dancing, dining with some man in a restaurant
Is that all you really want?
No, sophisticated lady,
I know, you miss the love you lost long ago
And when nobody is nigh you cry
Smoking, drinking, never thinking of tomorrow, nonchalant
Diamonds shining, dancing, dining with some man in a restaurant
Is that all you really want?
No, sophisticated lady,
I know, you miss the love you lost long ago
And when nobody is nigh you cry
Sophisticated lady
You cry

Damn! I never realized what a command Julie had over the lower register of her voice. WELL DONE, GIRL!!!!

Without doubt the most beautiful arrangement of a legendary 'standard', performed by a singer ever close to my heart. Thank you, Miss London, for making the long empty evenings bearable.

Beautiful phrasing; In" Misty" she's jumping up an octave higher too...she wasn't just a sultry ALTO. Seems this "sophisticated lady" just might have been singing "about herself"..the smoking, drinking perhaps ? Julie London's songs soothed many of us through the COVERT 19, didn't they?!
We just listened to "Misty." again....
I'll just BET the sax came in after the VOICE track ---That's what I said when Adriano Fontana said just sing it and I'll "weave in and out of the acapella" and he did....SMOOTH ARRANGEMENTS.KEEP the sax, get rid of the flutes! Julie probably complained about them too! Oops, too late!
For GREAT SAX, go to Johnny Sax Pugh, Barcelona, and tell him I sent you!
LOOK UP " What Can I Say" from the movie " The George Ratt Story" film.
Many of her songs got a few of us through the Covert 19.
"Hello, Goodbye" Not for the Faint of Heart
(" What is This Thing Called Love?")

What is this thing called love?
What is this thing called love?
Enhance me, enchant me, dance me, romance me,
But what is this thing called love?

What is this think called goodbye?
What is this thing called goodbye?
Deception is natural, the concept deplorable,
What is this thing called goodbye?

What is this thing called goodbye?
What is this thing called goodbye?
You said through eternity,
Now you mean nothing to me.
What is this thing called goodbye?

What is this thing called hello?
What is this thing called hello?
Buried in secrecy, promises known to me,
What is this thing called goodbye?
