Partial Exemption Special Methods (PESMs) can be complex. Gaining total control and visibility over the PESM compliance process is not without its fair share of challenges. PESM calculations see costs allocated against multiple sectors, with specific transactions blocked/excluded, and adjustments made, before it’s possible to identify the amount of VAT that can be recovered. The process is time-consuming, can see recoverable VAT missed and, in the event, the business gets it wrong, can trigger an unexpected and unwelcome investigation by HMRC.
