The Queen of Holy Rosary Catholic Church was destroyed by a fire Thursday. Authorities are investigating the cause, and say it may have been due to a gas leak.

She's lucky... it sounds like a lean mix of gas/air. Those make a loud bang and can be very destructive, but people often survive those types of explosions. (Not always of course.) There is not a lot of heat in the initial explosion in a lean mix. Conversely, a rich mix can have dozens of times the destructive force, and the heat alone can kill nearby victims.

If you smell gas in an enclosed room... get out. If you haven't stepped inside yet, then don't. If you notice gas once your inside get out... DO NOT TURN ON ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES OR LIGHTS... for instance: do not turn on a fan to suck the gas/air out. You can open any nearby doors or windows, but be careful for the chance of sparks, and static electricity. That's why it's usually best just to walk straight out of the building. Introduce NO heat sources. Once out side the building, call the gas company.
