Transcript in points:
*Feudalism was a political and economic system during the middle ages .
*Feudalism involved 4 levels of society.
*The King was at the top as he was the leader of the entire kingdom.
*Beneath him were the nobles (or barons) and these were the wealthiest land owners.
*Beneath the nobles were the knights or vassals and their role was of the fighting warrior who usually battled on horseback.
*On the bottom of society were the peasants or serfs.
*Peasants were farmers who worked the land, tending to crops and animals. They were the poorest members of the medieval world and made up the biggest majority of the population.
*In these four social levels feudalism worked in an exchange of land for protection, money or food.
*In the early middle ages, Europe was very unstable due to war and invasions.
the Kings were quite weak and struggled to rule their entire kingdoms by themselves
*The system of feudalism arose as a matter of security for these European Kings who decided it would be best to divide their land up so they would not have to look after such a large area alone.
*If they strengthened their kingdom it would be harder for foreigners to invade.
*In the feudal system, the King would keep a share of the land for himself which would be used for his palace and hunting land etc.
*The rest of the kingdom was then divided between nobleman who had been loyal to the King. The size of the land they received would depend on their personal ties with the King and the status of their family.
*Those lords would then keep some of the land for themselves and divide the rest up between knights of their choosing.
*In turn, the knights would give some of their portion of the kingdom to peasants who became serfs who were tied to the land and were not free to leave.
*Feudalism was based on an exchange of land fro something in return (mentioned earlier).
*On the very bottom of society, the peasants would work growing food and tending to animals. They were the backbone of society as the food they grew was not ONLY for themselves and their family but rather for the whole of the kingdom. So, the knights would give land to the peasants so that they had farming are to grow this food. In return, the knights would protect the peasants. This was the exchange of land for labour.
*Knights were given land by the nobles on the condition that the knights would be loyal to the lords and fight in battles when needed. This again was an exchange of land for labour.
*On the top of the scale, the nobles were given land by the King so that they would provide these knights to the King. The role of the nobles was to build up an army, be loyal and give money to the king; this is what they had to do in exchange for their land.
*So, the feudal system was quite beneficial to the King up the top as all he had to do was share some of his land and on return he would receive food, military protection, money and knights. This strengthened the kingdom and allowed him to remain in power.

Thank you. I am using this to help my freshman understand medieval Europe a little better. So far this is the best explanation of the feudal system on youtube that takes up the least amount of time.

Simple and good. I used this as an introduction where I could later sort of "build around it" when medieval history gets detailed :) Good stuff

I am born. By my birth I have the right to thrive on this planet just as much as anyone else born (see US Constitution). Therefor, I get to drink the clean water, eat the food our mother Earth, readily provides, sleep and make camp where there is space. Yet, when I was born I had to accept a monetary debt because our mother Earth is no longer allowed to provide food, water, and shelter. The "bankers" cordoned off those necessities. To get these vital things, I will need a job, and a car to get to that job. I'll have to buy a house, too. Oh yeah, if I want to buy a house I will need to go to college first, so that I can get a job that pays enough to make the mortgage. Then I'll owe the people that claim to own everything, more than they will ever let me "earn" from them. Before I knew it, I was working everyday to make some cooperation's oligarchs richer, so that I would be allowed to eat "food", to drink "water", and to have shelter. Hmm... I thought that was my birth right. IT IS. YOU ALL ARE JUST TOO DAMN STUPID AND COWARDLY TO STANDUP TO THE FEW SOCIOPATHS THAT TOOK THIS PALNET OVER and stole our birthrights. They don't own shit and the can't do shit if we would just reject their constructed system and start chopping off their heads.
