There are many different types of boning and support you can use for both corsets and stays. So let me show you a few examples whether they were historically used, or maybe slightly more unconventional but still very practical.

Patterns used for these corsets/stays:
Green Fashion corset: A knipmode pattern I cannot recommend, has wrong material listings and such
Regency short stays: Laughing Moon Mercantile Pattern # 115 Ladies' Regency & Romantic Era Corset 1805 - 1840 with corded & Theatrical Versions (Good pattern for Bridgerton costumes)
Cyberpunk EL wire stays: An adaptation of Patterns of Fashion 5, Pattern number 27 page 108-109

Timestamps:
0:00 Introduction
0:29 Flat steel boning
1:32 Spiral steel boning
2:13 Synthetic baleen/Whalebone
3:30 Cording
4:08 Wood
4:54 Tiewraps/Cable ties

I’m late to the party but why is reed an impractical boning material? I imagine it’s much less accessible than cording or zip ties, but likely more so than EL wire or synthetic baleen
