Tax Ombud calls for structural independence from SARS

The office of the Tax Ombud has called for structural independence from the South African Revenue Service. Tax Ombud Judge Bernard Ngoepe says it's an anomaly that the ombud plays the role of oversight to SARS, but it is also financially dependent on the revenue authority. The tax ombud office deals with complaints by taxpayers against SARS. Ngoepe says structural independence is important for the public to have confidence in the office.
