Haemochromatosis and the link between arthritis and liver disease

Показать описание
Do you have haemochromatosis? This important news may affect you.
New research by QIMR Berghofer and Edith Cowan University has found a link between #arthritis and #liver disease in those with this common iron overload #genetics condition.
Haemochromatosis is a hereditary disease where those affected absorb too much iron from their diet. Although iron is essential for good health, having too much iron can lead to health issues.
The body regulates iron levels to make sure they stay within the optimal range. In patients with haemochromatosis, this regulation does not work very efficiently and affected individuals continue to absorb iron even though their body already has enough.
The symptoms associated with excess iron are highly variable. Many people will not show any signs of disease at all. Others might experience relatively mild symptoms, such as lethargy or weakness.
Yet others can be more severely affected and develop arthritis, diabetes, liver damage or heart disease. Haemochromatosis can even be life-threatening in rare cases.
