Definitely very placement-based. I nearly always change the hand to make the boomerang arc as close to following the track as possible.

So basically whichever way they go through more of the track

well it's about the lay out of the map

for this track, there are 5 left turns and 6 right turns, which suggests why right hand wins at curls along the turn, and other random factors such as placement density also affect the results, so I wouldn't say this can be final
