The Reality Of Hunting A GLORY TAG | LESSONS LEARNED

In this episode of Lessons Learned, Randy Newberg is substituted by his proteges Marcus Hockett and Michael Parente. During the 2020 season, Michael was lucky enough to draw a glory elk tag in Idaho. The hunt was successful as Michael shot a mature bull elk in a canyon as far away from roads as possible.

This unit was heavily roaded and a generally flat sage brush landscape. The plan was to try and cover as much ground as possible to try and find sign before honing in on an area for the remainder of the trip. Even though this was a glory tag, it started off much different than they expected.

Michael and Marcus cover a few lessons that they learned from this adventure. They talk about how to be mentally prepared for a glory tag, being prepared to move camp if need be, and how to prepare as much as possible before you ever set foot in the unit.

Probably my biggest thing would be the super high expectations. Whenever I go on any fishing trip I KNOW i'm going to get something and it's going to be awesome. When your expectations gets shattered it is so hard not to let emotions drag you down. Excellent job guys.

Wife drew that hunt the first year it went to shit. She unfortunately had the November tag instead of the December tag. We also had to find resident elk as no snow in Nevada to push them into Idaho. I put her on two elk. The only 2 we seen in 2 weeks. Both pushing 400 inches. She wouldn't shoot at either one because she refused to shoot past 400 yrds. I'm perfectly fine with her decision but was one of the most frustrating hunts of my life. Hunt went from over 90% success to no better than an over the counter tag the year she had it. Hard to watch a monster walk away that you could easily shoot but you don't have the tag. Respect to my wife for being ethical and knowing her limits I guess?

I remember that hunt. One thing you did well was bagged a huge ass elk on public land in tough conditions. Never give up! Awesome job guys.

I learned from this hunt of yours that elk will live in these nearly canyons. I would not have imagined elk to be there. But that haul out looked brutal!
