An interesting experiment, and I like the idea of making a hive with the bees in mind; a secure hive being a high priority.

Maybe not quite so high up in the canopy? Make the trip shorter for them. Plus the sway of the trees is amplified the higher up you are. Hypothetically you could get the best of both worlds. Maybe hang it from a sturdy branch 1/3 or 1/2 up the trunk?
