DP/30 in Cannes: Carol, Phyllis Nagy

She has been with the story from the first notion of making the Patricia Highsmith ("Pat" to her) novel into a feature film. More than a decade later, this veteran writer of stage and screen, has finally seen her vision come to the screen... and to rave reviews at Cannes to boot. Nagy spoke to David Poland about the film, its journey, her journey, and the politics of being a woman and a lesbian in the show business culture.

This is great. I dont know who i love more. Her or the interviewer for getting such an interesting conversation out of her! creating this ambiance and rhythm...
This interview has made Yentl my fave movie as a Woman and person and
Carol my second fave as a lesbian and person.
That part where you talk about everyone being an adult and the audience understanding each character without a word being said. Was spot on, to my experience.
After all this is my world.
These are my people.
My first lover later became my longtime best friend while still in love with me.
The unrequited male love interest.
The magic of a gaze across a room, a first touch.
Saying you have my devoted attention without actually making an approach
The casual suitor who's oblivious to the body language of women who have something deeper and extremely intimate going on between them. suggesting he's a nuisance and interrupting.

Im glad it took so many years because it shows. Its as perfect as it could be.

and overall the universality that is love. makes it sooo raw. Because its not about shooting aliens. or zeus or superpowers. This we all Get. This we've all lived. And it just grabs you as you get lost in their gaze. But without the collaboration of everyone involved. The would not be there. ....

I love this woman! What a wonderful interview--explaining the process of getting "Carol" onto the screen as a film writer on this project. A very long journey . . . and for us, a film to look forward to in late fall/winter.
