Tim Keller sermons via Gospel in Life: One of the clearest commands Jesus gives us in the Gospels is to give to the poor. Jesus became poor for us, and we must also love the poor with radical generosity.

This sermon was preached by Rev. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on April 5, 1998.

Thank you for this! My family(husband, daughter, son & I) have been struggling with poverty for about 18 years. We lost everything; house, cars & belonings) 3 times! Every time we seem to get a glimpse of hope we're hit with something. We have been homeless 3 times & are just barely getting by. I have been sick for many of those years unable to work; I had 6 surgeries in the past 2 1/2 years. It has been so difficult but I love the Lord Jesus because no matter what we lose we will always have his love.

This is probably the most compelling sermon I have ever heard. This sermon completely peeled my blinders and gave me eyes to see the world as God asks me to.

For several years I floundered in my faith despite believing in the Cross, and desiring to follow Christ. Then I heard Piper in a series called “When I don’t desire God” where he talked about having God as your highest treasure. I’d never heard such language and I was no where near that point and still had many idols in my life. I really took in what he was teaching and for the first time also heard about eternal security in Christ. It was utterly encouraging and spurred me on to get into God’s word more often and pray for the hunger to desire to read it, and to know Him. Since that point I’ve listened to Keller 100’s of times to compliment my reading of scripture. It’s been utterly profound in helping me better understand the heart of the Father, and how to practically live the gospel out. Sermons like this one, the struggle for love, marriage as commitment and priority, and your more recent no other gospel sermon on Galatians in 2017 have been some of the most notable. Thanks John and Tim for your faithful service to God’s glorious & eternal Kingdom.

this sermon absolutely nails exactly what the issue is with upper middle class, over zealous, self righteous evangelicals in many of the suburbs of the USA. These folks are ready to tell every poor person they meet to "pull themselves up by their bootstraps" or "just work harder, if I did it why cant you", while they reap many of the benefits that this broken society harvests from the poor. There are good people in those neighborhoods as well but unfortunately many of the most zealous, outspoken born again christians ive met have conveniently chosen to omit the teachings Mr. Keller speaks about here choosing to shame the poor with guilt and accusations of laziness instead of showing mercy and understanding

its cruel to tell a bootless man to 'pull himself up by his bootstraps'.

If God was willing to condescend to allow us to call Him Father, then who are we not to condescend to those less fortunate than ourselves? "to willingly lower oneself to another's level."

So why do Redeemer Presbyterian church-goers coldly REFUSE to help the poor to get mentoring to reenter the workforce appropriately when they ask directly: of Diaconate, of small groups, of Elders?

Aah but Oswald Chambers says " the bedrock on His kingdom is poverty, not possession not decisions for Jesus Christ, it is our absolute futility. We must see that we are all poor in His Spirit." it is not about economics or monetary status!
Please ask God to reveal the truth of His word to you. Read the Word for yourself!

👄 Understand, become, love.
But not helping, saving, dedicating, changing the situation of the poor.

We r crushed, disheartened, exhausted.

Do you think Matthew and Luke reported the same sermon (Matthew 5-7; Luke 6)?

Religion just means belief in a higher power, there's a sacred text etc. Protestantism IS absolutely a religion so Protestants need to stop dumping on ''religion''.
