Our First Stop in Mexico - We Almost Didn't Leave Mazatlán

We've barely made it into Mexico and we're already in love. Mazatlán has been so amazing that we truly don't want to leave this Mexican oasis! Mazatlán is just a few hundred miles from the USA border, and is our first long stop on our road trip from Canada all the way through Central America with our dog, Evie. We originally planned to be here for just a week or so, but three weeks later, we are still loving it.

In this video, we start our day of exploring in the Central area (Centro Historico) which is a gorgeous spot filled with restaurants and little shops aimed at tourists. Nearby is the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception which we took a look at from outside, because what visit to a Latin American city is incomplete without a quick visit to a holy sight? Lucky for us, nearby the cathedral is Mercado Pino Suarez, or Pino Suarez Market. This market has just about anything you could want, and Evie absolutely loved all the smells she was able to find hiding in every corner of this market. The main level has butchers, flower shops, souvenir spots, and desert merchants, and upstairs is filled with all things Mexican food!

For lunch we got ourselves some proper Mexican food with Evie at our feet hoping we would drop something. Mico actually ordered a breakfast dish of eggs, chorizo, and beans, and I was able to try tostadas for the first time. Oh my goodness were our meals amazing!! Trying Mexican food in Mexico is such a treat, and we are hoping we will learn more about Mexican food as we continue our journey south through the rest of Mexico in the months to come.

After lunch we had the unfortunate experience of finding one of the few places in Mexico that doesn't allow dogs - El Faro Lighthouse. We had read online that it was okay to bring dogs, but evidently that is wrong because we were told we wouldn't be able to walk up to the lighthouse with Evie in tow. So, we went back the next day without her and made the short journey to the top of El Faro to get spectacular views of Mazatlán from above.

Mazatlán is a coastal city with an incredible malecón (boardwalk). The boardwalk covers 21 kilometers of coast and was made for pedestrians, bikers, and shop keepers to enjoy the beauty of the coast. With the beach right below, this boardwalk is easily one of our favourite things about Mazatlán. If we were to ever move to Mexico permanently, this boardwalk would definitely put Mazatlán on our list of potential cities to live in!

======================

Hey there! We are Nicole and Mico and in March 2021, we quit our jobs, sold our belongings, and began traveling the world! We never thought we'd be making travel vlogs on YouTube, but after realizing that we had a unique opportunity to share our adventure and make the world feel more familiar and inviting to anyone watching, we took the leap and picked up the camera! We hope our videos show how wonderful, delicious, and friendly the world can be.

I love that you are slow traveling. Other channels make me dizzy with how fast they explore a place and rush again to the next thing. This feels relaxing and enjoyable to watch and we get to see a bigger picture. Thank you!

I love that you’re taking your time and moving at your own rhythm- I know your work is content driven, but I appreciate that you’re digging deeper where you are and not as frenetic as some other folks. Models positive work life balance :)

I hope they come back soon Mazatlán is growing, it has been modernizing for approximately 10 years, I am sure that in another 10 years I will be unrecognizable. I hope you can enjoy it again. 😊

When corn tortillas accompany your meals, what you usually do is you roll them into tight little tacos (with nothing or salt in them) and you use these tight tacos to push food onto your fork (the way you might use your knife) and you bite the top off after each time you push food onto your fork (or you can dip it into the sauces left over from the food and eat them that way, also as tight tacos). There are some folks who don't like to make tacos out of the whole tortilla (because it can be long), so you can rip it in half or into quarters and make a bite-sized tight taco out of each piece, that you just pop into your mouth once it's soggy from pushing your food onto your fork (or whenever you want). If avocado is served with your meal, you customarily place a few avocado slices on a tortilla (you can smush them with a fork if you want a softer consistency), sprinkle salt on them, wrap it into a taco and eat it. Happy to hear you're enjoying Mexico!

I’m visiting Mazatlán for this 1st time this week with my son, and it is really beautiful here. The El Faro walk was a beast, 😂. We are going to Deer Island to close out the trip.

I guess we Will have to wait for the next video for your impressions, but years ago, I went to both places and found that Mazatlan’s beaches way cleaner and nicer than Puerto Vallarta’s beaches — as PV is in a bay so debris collected there.
