Strange sounds near Hetton, North Yorkshire, UK (Possible Cryptid?)

On February 14th 2009, I embarked on a night training walk from Conistone to Skipton (~15 miles). It had been snowing but was unusually warm. When we were leaving Hetton for Flasby towards the end of our walk, we could hear a very strange sound.

If you listen to the clip, you can hear it particularly towards the end. At the time, I was absolutely convinced it was some kind of large animal. The sound is a kind of high-pitched wailing (it was a lot louder than it sounds on the clip). If anybody has any idea what this could be, please do comment!!!

I could not see anything but it could be heard from a long way away.

As the area is quite remote and rural, I guess I assumed it was a farm animal of some sort (still could be!) although it sounded like it was in considerable distress. It has bothered me ever since and I have not been able to find anything that sounds similar on Youtube.

Apologies for the talking on this video - I have muted a couple of short bits as they are distracting. The sound is otherwise untouched.

This was filmed on an old-style (miniDV tape!) camcorder so the quality of the picture (what you can see at least) is pretty poor by today's standards. I have added subtitles to help a little.

The time of recording was probably midnight I think.

At some time, I will make a longer video and try to add a little more context/information...

Thank you, there may well be a rational explanation. It's the not knowing that is bothering me :-)
